Giant Suede E electric bicycle replacement battery

A while ago we bought a Giant Suede E electric bicycle, it was in fairly good condition but had been used to commute 15 miles a day, so the 36v 9Ah NiMH  battery was at the end of its life.

 Giant Suede Battery

We tried to rejuvenate the existing NiMH battery, but although it would hold a charge, it would not supply a high enough discharge rate to propel the bike without a warning sound and power cut out.

We decided to take the battery pack apart and test cells individually and found that there were no dud cells, they were all about the same, so there was no quick fix of replacing the odd dud cell.

NiMH Cells Found Inside Battery Housing

After quite a lengthy search on the web we could find a number of generic replacement battery packs for electric bikes but none of these could be fitted in the same location as the existing battery pack which is customised to the bike and is quite stylish.

We decided to explore replacing the cells in the battery pack and contacted a well known battery manufacturer in China about making a custom battery pack.
After a lengthy and detailed exchange of information we agreed on a specification and paid in advance for the battery pack to be assembled and sent along with a new dedicated battery charger.

The part number is LNW-INR10S-5P29-Y15-SL (from Shenzhen DROWSEN Technology Co).

The specification is as follows:

1. Nominal voltage: 36V
2. Rated capacity: 14.5Ah.
3. Cell: Panasonic 18650PF 3.7V 2900mah
4. Dimension: 21.5x 11 x 6cms
5. Weight: 2.5KG
6. Operating temperature: -20 °C to 60 °C
7. Charge temperature: 0 °C to 45 °C
8. Storage temperature: -20 °C to 45 °C
9. Operating humidity: 5% to 90%

BMS Specification:
1. Operating current: 15A (max constant)
2. Peak current: 18A  (10mins max)
3. Charge current: 2A
4. Over-voltage protection: 42.5V
5. Under-voltage protection: 28.0 V
6. Over-temperature protection: 70°C

Battery Pack and Charger Prior to Shipping

Soon after ordering the battery arrived and we were able to integrate it into the existing housing and modify the existing power connector port to suit the new charger plug and added a 40A discharge protection fuse.

Installation pictures are below:

We have been using the battery for a number of weeks now and it is excellent, the bike has good range and recharge times, and has transformed the performance of the bike.

Hopefully this Blog will help others who would like a new battery for a Giant Suede E electric bike.

  3. Found your posting here, contacted Shenzhen Drowsen Technology Co., Ltd. via Alibaba and had 2 batteries created and shipped to me in about 16 days for $400 including shipping. New battery is so much lighter than the original and so far it has worked great. I have not tested the range yet but it gets better than the original battery's 4 miles so that is great. Thanks for the post, it was very helpful.

  7. Thanks from me too. I’ve also just emailed to see if they can still supply the battery. Meanwhile, can you provide any more details on the 40A fuse? What make of fuse did you use and where did you connect it?

    3. The 40A fuse is just a standard car type fuse (of the type you can push a female spade connectors onto). You can purchase fuse holders for these fuses or use the female spade connectors but if you use the individual connectors you should make sure they are a tight fit (if necessary you can set them slightly tighter with pliers). I would also add further insulation, this fuse should never blow in normal use it is there to protect the battery for accidental short circuit.

    1. Hi Did you ever install this battery ? I too have been considering this upgrade, but all off the shelf battery packs are 70mm (the length of 18650 batts) just about the exact same thickness as the Giant one including case :-( I am thinking about doing this and cutting a hole in the case about the size of the battery pack, and then re fixin with some sort of lip.

    2. Hi Dave, My query is the same as 'Unknown' above, the length of 18650 bats is 70mm the same as the outside thickness of the suede battery case. Did you somehow modify the battery case or was your battery somehow made shorter ?

  9. Just to let anyone else know I was not successful on alibaba but I did find a bike shop in Canada that had the perfect fit. I installed yesterday, charged it up and took my first ride. Battery worked out perfect. I used the screenshots above to install and everything worked as mentioned. Here's a link to the battery. https://ebikebc.com/product/bare-battery-10-4ah/

    1. Hi Dave, Did you have to modify the battery case ? as the height of the battery pack in your link is 70mm ? Which would seem to be to tall to fit inside the case ?

    1. I am considering a Suede E as my FIRST e-bike. What would you recommend for battery replacement?

  14. Hello Doug I am based in the UK so not convenient to call and no longer have the bike, I left the Blog up in case it helped someone else to realise better performance from their Suede bike with Lithium Ion, the pack worked very well and gave good life. It should be possible to make you own generic battery packs, there is quite a lot of info about this on the web e.g. making your own spot welder to connect the cells etc. Good luck.

    3. Any advice for a newbie thinking about buying a Suede E? Battery replacement experience or thoughts?

      Delete
    4. The Suede does not lend itself to an easy battery swap and it is nice to use the same box with new cells, however if you are not competent you shouldn't try and repack one as shown above. You should be able to get a packaged 36v battery and dedicated charger that could sit on a rear carrier etc. and have someone competent make up a power lead to connect to the power control module. That would leave you with a gap lower down, but you might be able to fix the empty battery casing in place to make it more aesthetically pleasing and to hide the new power lead. Good luck with your search for a suitable ebike.

    5. Thanks for responding, both you and RichardS.
I am a retired marine electrician, so if it is matter of making connections and soldering, that doesn’t scare me - unless you are saying it ended up being a big pain in the ass? As I recalled, in the end you were pleased, right? It WOULD be nice to have it end up looking as it does.
Though also the faint thought HAS passed through to instead have 48 volts. Crazy?

      Delete
    6. I am not sure if the electronics would like 48V. It sounds like you are competent and could design and build your own battery pack (possibly from recycled laptop 18650 cells). Lithium Ion battery fire risk would probably be the main concern so the challenge then would be to find/make a suitable charger/battery monitoring system. I decided to opt for a custom made battery pack with proven charger/BMS that would fit in the existing box, this blog proves that is possible you just need to find a supplier willing to make one at an acceptable price. Alternatively you may be able to repackage one of the batteries that fits on the rear carrier into the existing housing - an opportunity to produce your own blog. Good luck, be safe.

  17. Hi Henry - I struggled to find a way of replacing the existing battery at sensible cost and ended up buying a battery for £140 on ebay (https://www.ebay.co.uk/p/4032617790?iid=113743762163). I drilled a few holes in the rear parcel rack to screw down the base unit for the battery and connected it up under the pedals with some old electrical flex and a terminal block. I've been delighted with the improvement in performance. As Alan suggests, you could replace the old battery casing minus the cells to make it look better, but I've just left a gap. I can send you photos if you wish. Good luck.
